All About Running Boards and Tube Steps for 2020-2024 Jeep Gladiator JT

Running boards and tube steps are extended stepping surfaces for Jeep Gladiator pickups, your JT model from between 2020 and 2024 included. You may know them by names like step rails, side steps, side rails, or nerf bars. Tube steps differ from running boards insofar as they're tubular, typically installing under each door and having stepping surfaces that are narrower. Running boards, in contrast, mount close to or flush with rocker panels, improving ground clearance; they have profiles that are usually flatter and wider; and their treads often span the boards' length.

Naming aside, they share common characteristics. For one, they can be made of stainless steel, cast aluminum, or another load-bearing metal. Secondly, they can be powder-coated for higher durability and better corrosion resistance. Some -- illuminated running boards, for example, with LED light kits -- can even light up the step area. Others -- powered running boards -- extend automatically when your truck doors open and retract automatically when they close, both hands-free.

To install a set, you'll need safety glasses, a flashlight, a wax pencil, wrench, ratchet and socket sets, an impact driver, a flat screwdriver or punch, a drill, drill bits, wheel chocks, and touch-up paint. How to install, generally: use the wax pencil to mark the mounting holes under your pickup, plus where any holes need drilling, and both, for each of the boards' brackets, then drill the holes, put the fasteners in, align the brackets, and finger-tighten them.
