What are the Signs of a Faulty Air Intake?
For one, the engine revving too fast in park or neutral -- something called "high idle." Secondly, idle speeds increasing or decreasing dramatically. Third, the Check Engine light showing up on the dash. These symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for other engine problems, like bad spark plugs, or worse, a blown head gasket.
What's happened is the intake manifold has stopped shunting air to the engine cylinders as well (it's stopped helping cool them as well, too), and because of that, combustion's gotten worse, and the engine's stopped running as well. Some part of the induction system or another will need to be replaced.; do an inspection to figure out which.
How Much Does Air Intake Replacement Cost on Average?
That depends on the part. An engine air filter, for example, can go for $60 to $75 on average (and its housing can run up the bill further), while an intake manifold gasket might run $550 to $615 plus. Inlet hoses, $175 to $190 or more on average, and so on.
It can also depend on the make and model you drive. Take Toyota Camry, for instance; an air filter for one might cost $50 or $60. The manifold gasket in a Subaru Outback? $365 plus. A hose for Dodge Ram 1500, a couple hundred dollars -- the list goes on.
If you're changing air intakes, be sure to use OEM parts; avoid the aftermarket.
Why Buy an OEM Air Intake, vs. Aftermarket?
Off-brand knockoffs are sometimes lower-quality, they occasionally don't fit quite right, and they can end up not working as well. Stick with OEM, and you shouldn't have these problems. Genuine parts your manufacturer makes won't void your factory warranty, either.
