All About Running Boards and Side Steps for Jeep Grand Cherokee

Running boards are extended stepping surfaces for Jeep SUVs like Grand Cherokee. You may know them as step rails, side steps, side rails, or, if you're active in the sports-car community, nerf bars or tube steps.

Naming aside, each kind shares common characteristics: stainless steel, cast aluminum, or another load-bearing metal construction; optional powder coating for higher durability and better rust-resistance; mounting close to or flush with a rocker panel to enhance ground clearance; a flat and wide profile; a board-length tread, and so on. Illuminated running boards with LED light kits, for instance, can even light up step areas. Powered running boards, for another example, can extend automatically when the doors of your SUV open and retract when they close, both hands-free.

Installing a set is straightforward. All you'll need are some safety glasses, a flashlight, and a wax pencil, a lot of the time, plus some tools (namely, wrench, ratchet, and socket sets, an impact driver, and a flat screwdriver or punch), a drill and drill bits, wheel chocks, and a bit of touch-up paint. How to install, usually, is you mark the mounting holes under your ride with the wax pencil, plus where any holes need drilling, for each of the boards' brackets. Then, drill the holes, stick the fasteners in, align the brackets, and finger-tighten things, keeping everything aligned and adjusting as needed as you go.
