All About Running Boards for 2018-2024 Jeep Wrangler JL

Running boards make great extended stepping surfaces for Jeep SUVs, not the least among them, your Wrangler -- especially if it's a JL model from between 2018 and 2024. You may know them by many names: step rails, side steps, or side rails, for example. If you're active in, say, the sports-car community, you may also know their siblings, nerf bars or tube steps. Running boards differ from tube steps insofar as the latter are tubular, they typically install under each door, and their stepping surfaces are narrower than those of running boards.

Naming aside, they share common characteristics, like being made of stainless steel, cast aluminum, or another load-bearing metal, usually, with some coming powder-coated for higher durability and better resistance to rusting out. Some -- the illuminated kind, with LED light kits -- can even light up the step area. Others, powered, extend automatically when your SUV doors open, retracting when they close, hands-free.

How things are generally done is you use the wax pencil to mark the mounting holes under your ride, plus where any holes need drilling, for each of the boards' brackets, drill the holes, place the fasteners, align the brackets, and finger-tighten them, watching your alignment as you go and adjusting as needed.
