Buyer's Guide To Brake Calipers

What Are Brake Calipers?

The brake calipers are part of the overall disc brake system in your car, pickup, SUV, or van. Essentially, they're clamps that are located at each wheel.

How Do Brake Calipers Work?

When you press your foot against the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder sends brake fluid to the calipers. The pressure of the building fluid pressurizes pistons, which then close the calipers onto the brake rotors to generate the friction that slows the rotation of your tires. Since the calipers and rotors are metal, and therefore sensitive to heat and damage, the calipers have brake pads attached to them to cushion any contact and absorb heat.

How Do You Spot Signs of Failing Brake Calipers?

Signs of failure include:

  • Grinding or squealing noises when you're braking
  • The brake pedal feels softer than usual underfoot
  • Your vehicle pulls to one side when you brake

Why Buy OEM Brake Calipers Instead Of Generic?

Your manufacturer makes the only brake calipers that are guaranteed to fit your model, ensuring the compatibility that you want. Generic parts aren't held to those same rigid standards, so they aren't always a great choice. Our online auto parts store has everything you need, and offered at prices that are up to 35% lower than the MSRP!
