When you push down on the brake pedal, brake fluid gets sent from the master brake cylinder to pistons at each wheel. The growing pressure compels the brake calipers to close onto the rotors and produce the friction needed to stop. The brake pads cushion the contact between calipers and rotors.
How Do You Know If Your Brake Rotors Are Bad?
Braking produces a tremendous amount of heat, though. If your pads wear down, the friction and heat can damage your rotors. Let it go long enough and the rotors can even warp. Signs of trouble include brake wobbles, odd brake noises, and visible surface damage. A grinding sound is particularly worrisome, as that indicates a warped rotor -- which means the pads can't maintain consistent contact.
