OEM Brake Shoes FAQ

What Do Brake Shoes Do?

Brake shoes are part of a drum brake system, and help to slow -- and eventually stop -- the rotation of your wheels. A brake shoe is a crescent-shaped piece of steel with a rough material added to one side to add friction points. They're placed inside of the brake drums. When you press your foot against the brake pedal, the brake shoes respond by pushing against the drum. That produces the resistance needed to slow down the wheels.

What Types of Brake Shoes Are There?

  • Everyday brake shoes press the inner surface of the drum brake.
  • Clasp brake shoes press on the drum's exterior.
  • Pinch drum brakes get pressed between two brake shoes.
  • Lastly, band brakes feature a flexible belt that wrap around the drum.

How Do You Spot Faulty Brake Shoes?

No matter which type of brakes your Jeep, Toyota, or RAM uses, brake shoes will eventually wear down and go bad. Signs of trouble include:

  • You hear scraping or squeaking noises when you're braking
  • The brakes take longer to respond
  • The parking brake feels loose or isn’t working properly

How Much Do OEM Brake Shoes Cost?

On average, it costs between $260 and $300 to replace brake shoes, with labor accounting for roughly half of the expense. Of course, the parts price depends on your model and the type of pad you choose. If you're capable enough, you can do the job yourself and save on labor.
