FAQs About Control Arms

What Does a Control Arm Do?

The control arms serve as a link between your vehicle and its front wheels. One control arm end connects to your wheel assembly by way of a steel spindle, with the other attaching to the vehicle's frame via a control arm bushing.

What Types of Control Arm Assemblies Are There?

Control arms connect through bolt in, unitized, or press in assemblies. MacPherson struts typically features bolt-in assemblies. Unitized and press in assemblies both feature a ball joint, meaning that you'll need to replace the whole assembly when you're installing a new one. That's usually a far easier job than replacing the bolt-in type.

How Do You Spot Failing Control Arms?

Even the best control arms can wind up wearing out, or get bent or damaged from an impact. If that happens, your safe handling is quickly put at risk. Signs of trouble include:

  • Your wheels vibrate or wobble
  • Your steering wheel wanders or pulls to one side
  • Diminished ride quality
  • Your tire treads are wearing unevenly, even after an alignment
  • You hear odd noises

How Much Does it Cost to Replace A Control Arm?

Depending on your make, model, and the type of control arm you need, a replacement can cost between $200 and $550 for the parts alone, with labor tacking on another $150 to $200.
