A Brief History of the Dodge Dakota

The Dodge Durango pickup truck that debuted in 1987 was offered in either two- or four-door cab configurations that could pair to a variety of bed lengths. Nominated for a 2000 "North American Truck of the Year" award, the rear-wheel drive pickup was powered by four-cylinder, V6, or V8 engines that were yoked to either manual or automatic transmissions. The Dakota was retired from the Dodge lineup after the 2010 model year, but only because the Ram brand launched as a stand-alone marque in 2011 and the truck was added to that roster.

Notable Dodge Dakota Features

The truck came equipped with such features as:

  • 16-inch wheels
  • Front tow hooks
  • Skid plates
  • Sliding rear window
  • Dual position tailgate
  • Trailer tow wiring
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo system
  • Front bucket seats
  • Under-seat storage system
  • Six-disc CD changer
